    Key Management System (KMS)

Key Management SystemKMS refers to the management of cryptographic keys in a cryptosystem that deals with the generation, exchange, storage, use, destruction and replacement of keys. It enhances the security of smart cards. NIC has developed expertise in KMS and has implemented KMS for various PAN India projects like Smart Card-based DL/RC, National Population Register (NPR), Biju Krushak Kalyan Yojana (BKKY), Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana(RSBY) etc.

The establishment and management of Symmetric key Infrastructure (SKI) is the basic requirement for implementing Smart Card Security against fake duplication, illegal tampering of information, and implementing the authority environment to carry out different functionalities. The key management system forms the core of SKI which manages the security of data inside the chip and prevents tampering and unauthorized modification. The software for implementing these requirements has been developed and implemented by the Smart Card Technology Division of NIC.
